One commissioned painting's final resting place {Pics}

As you all know, I've been doing quite a bit of commissioned work lately. One of my bigger paintings, shown here before being stretched, made it's way to NYC as I prayed it would make it there with no issues.

I was finally able to get some pics from it's owner..what do you think? I was asked to create the painting with blues and greens and allow it to open up the room. I'm glad to know that I succeeded and she was overjoyed. It's always so stressful trying to figure out what the client has in their head and to get it just right.

P.S. If you have one of my paintings please send me pics! I love to see where they end up in your home! :)

Great Rooms, Graphic Patterns

Hi everyone! My name is Jenn and I am a writer for Arcadian Light, a website and blog that specializes in profiling top lighting trends from around the world. I just purchased my first home and I have become completely obsessed with light fixtures and finding the perfect one for each room in the house. Luckily, I have websites like The Inspired House of Wright, where Rachel never ceases to amaze me with her fun inspiring posts - thanks so much for letting me guest post here today!

Great rooms in graphic patterns are always a hit. With so much space to fill in a great room, a vibrant design can help occupy the openness and add dimension, style, and elegance. Applied to walls, furniture, or floors, or highlighted by a fabulous lighting fixture, graphic patterns always look great in great rooms, as evidenced by these eight stylish examples.

Stylish Great Rooms

This great living room is decked out in with bold Moroccan-inspired bold colours and prints. The expansive sectional sofa features floral patterns that mimic the outdoors that can be seen from all angles through the massive windows.

Stylish Great Rooms Ceiling Light

The floor is a unique place for a great room with graphic patterns. The ceiling fixture illuminates the carpet's bold starburst design in muted reds and pinks. Even the furniture picks up on this interesting color scheme.

Stylish Great Rooms
A fresh floral motif looks pretty on the accent wall of a great room, but the effect is further heightened by using the same graphic pattern in fabrics, such as the small chair's upholstery.
Stylish Great Rooms

This dining room section of a great room is stately with gorgeous patterned wallpaper and a soft, breezy colour palette.

Stylish Great Rooms Lamps

Graphic patterns are used in a myriad of ways in this great room - plaid on the chairs, floral prints on the couch, and striped table lamps all complement one another.

Stylish Great Rooms Wall Lamp

A rich shade of blue outfits this great room from head-to-toe. Although only a snippet of this great room is shown, the dramatic effects of this colour are obvious.

Stylish Great Rooms Table Lamp

This great room is loaded with personality, from the bevy of prints on the wall to the brilliant patterns on the couch.

Stylish Great Rooms Ceiling Light

A great room such as this, with chinoserie motifs on almost every surface, lends a unique old-world feel whilst still being sophisticated. The chandelier is the perfect finishing touch.

What did you think of these graphic patterns? You can make your home a hit by adding some track lights or table lamps! Stop by Arcadian Lighting Blog for more inspiration and great design ideas for your home!

I'm not a good farmer.

A few months ago I decided I was going to be a serious farmer. I gathered my veggies and tended to my lil crops day in and day out. Then summer hit. And I sort of let my farmer skills fall by the waist side. I did however, manage to somehow bonsai my tomato plant, so I feel like I DID in fact, accomplish something.

P.S. The tomatoes pictured above all came from the same plant. Over time they just kept shrinking! Oops.

Big Painting + Catching up

Let me officially apologize for my lack of posts lately. I know, I know, you're busy too. But for some reason I feel like I have this huge obligation to entertain you and at times, I fail horribly.

I'm going to start posting less due to the overwhelming amount of work I have on me at the moment. Currently, I'm working a full time job plus assisting in a few additional projects and making sure I stay up on my commissioned pieces. All while trying to have a life. Oh, and my best friend is getting married in less than 6 months and I have all those fun MOH duties. I'm not saying all of this to get sympathy BUT a little bit of understanding might help ;)On a positive note, I finished a HUGE painting that finally made it's way to NYC last week..Pics are above. It was quite the challenge to work on a 5 ft unstretched canvas! I'll post pics when they have it stretched and up on the wall...

Now let me be random for a moment. Do you remember trying to locate the most odd items for your wedding? I found myself searching for a photo shoot location this week for my bride which must have the following: A pretty park, a cute cafe window and a Barnes & Noble ALL within walking distance. I remember at one point in my wedding frenzy when I had to stop and laugh because I was searching for the following: Two vintage Coke bottles, a wedding topper with a couple who had dark hair, bobby pins with pearls on the end and lime green Bubba Kegs..6 to be exact.

Sorry for the random rant, it's just one of those days ;)

Pumpkins!

All of my friends and family know what a harvest geek I am. I LOVE FALL. I love the pumpkins, the chill in the air, Halloween, oh, I just adore it!

With that being said, I want to go ALL OUT with pumpkins this year. I've already begin my collection this weekend, scooping up 4 little guys for my yard.

Josh always warns me of my harvest obsession because I start too soon ( I can't help myself!!). By October 31st last year I was throwing my half-rotten pumpkins out on Halloween day because I was so sick of looking at them! Oh well, sometimes you never learn :/

I'm still a good graphic designer.

See? And you thought I'd thrown all my graphic design skills out the window for fine art..how dare you.

This was the official invite sent out for our niece's birthday party. How could one NOT use this picture I ask??

10 Years

Ten years ago, Josh and I were sitting in economics class watching 9/11 unfold. It will forever be a day that we will never forget. God bless the men and women who lost their lives on that day.

Where were you?

My new perfume

via flickr

I just happened to stumble upon the most amazing, delicate, romantic perfume recently. Have you seen/tried any Shelley Kyle Perfumes? You absolutely MUST try Tiramani by Shelley Kyle if you ever happen to run upon her collection in a boutique, it's my new favorite.

I have never been one for those fruity body splashes of today and I rarely get stopped in my tracks by a perfume that truly smells unique, but when I tried this one it literally made me put on the brakes.

What new scent are you currently loving?

Dream House

How truly amazing is this house?! Friends, I give you my dream home! I love how airy it is and the zen feel of it. The clean lines plus the mix of so much lush greenery makes it feel like a breath of fresh air. The Sun House ( perfect name?) in Singapore was designed by Guz Architects.

Irene's Fury

Down trees everywhere
My sis-in-law Janie enjoying a moment of relief in the eye of the hurricane. Notice her cute rain boots :)
Irene made herself known all over the east coast this weekend, mainly doing the most destruction in North Carolina and Virginia. My brother and sis-in-law were one of the unlucky ones who got the first hit, enduring almost 48 hours of the hurricane's fury.

At one point the eye was over them and they went outside to survey the damage and let their poor dogs use the bathroom for the first time in hours! They were sending me updates the entire time and even threw in a few photos of their poor pups who were absolutely stir crazy.

Did you encounter Irene? Was it better or worse than you thought it was going to be?

Well this isn't good.

The red dot is my brother and sis-in-law's house. Darn it. For anyone about to encounter Irene please be safe and smart and GET OUT of her way!

Shorts Suit..are you a fan?

Are you a fan of the emerging trend of shorts suits? I've seen these around and have to admit that I'm loving them, although, I'm a little hesitant if I can actually pull one off. I've even seen some that are quite reminiscent of my old 80's track suits (like this)..let's just hope and pray that those NEVER come back!

It's my one year blogiversary!

Today is officially my one year blogiversary. I want to take a moment to thank all of you from the depths of my heart for all of the love and support you have given me over the past year...

It's no secret that it's been one of the best years of my life. I married the most amazing man ever and it was he who pushed me to stand proud and share more about myself with the world. Starting this blog taught me that it's okay to feel vulnerable and that you're not growing unless you're a little uncomfortable. I have managed to meet some of the most amazing people from all over the world that I know will be long-lasting relationships. Blogging has become part of my daily life and I feel like something is missing in my week when I don't do a post. Thank you all, especially the ones who have been there from the very beginning, as my little blog was a mere 3 posts with 2 followers. I appreciate all of you more than you will ever know and thank you so much for every comment, every email and every shout out that you never had to give.

-Rachel

Thank you for all the support!

Creating "Lagoon"

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone for such amazing support as we have begun our adventure of rolling out our online shop. I've been SO extremely busy on new paintings and commissioned works (not complaining of course!) and appreciate the love more than you will ever know.  We had to skip the market last weekend for Josh's wares because he had simply sold out. Thank you, thank you, thank you again for supporting our small business and allowing us to do what we love to do..create.

Honeycomb!

I'm loving honeycomb motif patterns right now, a staple in modern design. It was deemed the pattern of the year and I think we're safe to say it's definitely made it's mark in all areas of design once again.

Are you a fan of the lovely geometric pattern or is it too much for you?
